Facebook announced some pretty big changes for brand pages this week. If you admin a company, nonprofit, or product page you probably noticed the message allowing you to preview the new layout. You might already see some other brands have made the switch.
And rightly so.
The new Timeline for brands can help you create a visual, multimedia, and chronological history of your brand. Here are some things you can do to enhance your page:
Brand your page: Add a unique cover photo and showcase your most important news on your page’s Timeline. Use the photo (851 x 315px) to engage users and present images with which they will positively respond.
Let ’em know you’re local: For local businesses only, a map appears in the row of apps below the cover photo. Make sure your address is included (and up to date) in your “About” section.
Highlight what matters: You’ll be able to choose a post (or “pin” it) to be listed at the top of your Timeline for up to a week. Use this post to express your weekly specials, your unique selling proposition, etc. Make it interesting. Pin a new post to the top of your page each week so people notice what’s important.
Multiply your multimedia: These are now more prominent than the standard profile photos. Photos and videos increase engagement among readers, so make them interesting and relevant to your audience.
Share your history: Just as with Timeline for personal profiles, Timeline for brands will allow admins to add milestones to the page. Add the date your company was founded and any important changes along the way. Did you win an award or open a new location? Create a milestone for it.
Manage everything in one place: See and respond to your recent activity and private messages right from the top of your page.
All brand pages will be upgraded to the new layout automatically on March 30, 2012. To see what your new page will look like, click the preview button at the top of your current page. If you like it already, you can publish right now rather than waiting a month.
